General Medical Examinations

General medical exams should be carried out by a general practitioner on a semi-annual or quarterly basis for general health and preventative screening, or to monitor and adjust treatments chronic diseases. These exams ordinarily involve obtaining your medical history as well as performing a physical examination and sometimes include further laboratory tests.

Our Fourways general practitioners conduct general medical examinations and also supply the necessary medical certificates needed for certain specific check-ups such as for the purposes of insurance procedures, pre-employment, adoption medicals, or for immigration and emigration.

Here is a summary of the basic tests and exams that you can expect from our general practitioners during a full medical check up:

Exams for Men:

• Blood pressure, pulse, temperature

• Full examination with emphasis on cardiovascular examination

• Finger prick blood glucose (sugar)

• Urine test

• If over 45 or cardiovascular risk (smoking, BMI over 25, high blood pressure or high cholesterol):

• ECG

• Prostate examination +- PSA blood test

• Also inquiry into sexual function and testosterone sufficiency / deficiency

Blood Tests for Men:

• Full blood count

• Kidney function

• Liver function

• Cholesterol (must be done fasting)

• Glucose, if finger prick is above normal (also fasting)

• PSA

• CRP

• Thyroid, if symptomatic.

• HIV if living in South Africa

• Testosterone if indicated

Exams for Women:

• Blood pressure, pulse, temperature

• Full examination

• Finger prick blood glucose (sugar)

• Urine test

• Annually: PAP smear and Breast examination

Other Tests for Women:

• Mammogram if over 35 years, repeat every 5 years.

• Bone density if post-menopausal

• ECG if post-menopausal or cardiovascular risk (see above)

• Full blood count

• Kidney function

• Liver function

• Cholesterol (must be done fasting)

• Glucose, if finger prick is above normal (fasting)

• Thyroid function
